Religious persecution continues to increase in the Middle East.

On Monday, February 23, 2015, members of the Islamic State extremist group ISIL kidnapped 90 Assyrian Christians in the Hasaka province, in the Northwest of Syria. The figures could rise to about 150 people, according to a news agency.

Terror has increased from this abduction, and entire families have fled their homes to neighboring countries such as Jordan and Turkey. Indeed, as a result of persecution and kidnapping, the population in Hasaka province of more than 120,000 people has been reduced to less than half.

According to news reports supplied by the Syrian Observatory for human rights, the kidnappers have detained the victims in retaliation against the coalition troops led by the United States, advancing by land towards positions held by the extremists. The operation had been supported by the military coalition aircraft bombing.

Several churches have been attacked in Syria, with 10% of the Christian population and its members forced to pay the tithe to save their lives.

The week before these attacks, ISIL fighters had released a video showing the beheadings of 21 Egyptians members of the Coptic Christian Church.

Since ISIL militants declared the Islamic Caliphate in territory between Iraq and Syria, religious persecution has increased considerably in the entire Middle East and North Africa region known as "The Levant".

The Canadian Human Rights International Organization (CHRIO), headquartered in Toronto, Canada, condemns the kidnapping of the 90 Assyrian Christians in Syria, the murder of the 21 Coptic Christians in Egypt and the religious persecution in the Islamic world.

In addition, CHRIO asks the Governments of Syria, Iraq and Egypt to step up efforts to root out completely all factions of extremist groups from their territory, in order to create the necessary climate of peace to exercise religious freedom and defense of human rights.
